This is the traditional Southern Cornbread that I grew up with. It’s a no frills recipe that was a staple in East Texas.
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup yellow stone ground corn meal
- 3/4 cup flour
- 1 T baking powder
- 1 egg
- milk
- 1T salt
Directions
- Oil and Pre-heat a large cast-iron skillet
- Sift the dry ingredients
- Mix in the egg & milk – for standard cornbread add enough milk so that the batter is at a thick, but pourable consistency. If making to use in dressing, add more milk to get a medium pourable consistency.
- Pour into the hot skillet
- Bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 400 degrees F.
Additional ingredients can be added to this base mix to alter the flavor of the cornbread such as sugar/honey, cheese, peppers, etc.
