Grandma Burns used to make this bread and it’s a really hearty and rich bread.    It is delicious right out of the oven.  Highly recommended if your into making bread.  This recipe will make 3 large loafs and 1 small loaf.


  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 5 cups white flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1t salt
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 2 egg whites
  • 2 packages yeast dissolved in 1/2c or less of warm water
  • 1 cup Bran
  • 2T wheat germ


  1. Mix flours
  2. Heat milk almost to a simmer and then add butter, salt and honey, then cool
  3. After cooled, add egg whites
  4. Prepare the yeast and pour into the milk mix
  5. Add Bran and wheat germ
  6. Add flours and stir
  7. Knead the bread for about 10 minutes
  8. Place in a large bowl for 45 minutes to 1 hour to rise
  9. Knead the dough again and then put it in loaf pans that have been greased and floured
  10. Allow the dough to rise again for 1 hour
  11. Bake at 350 degrees F for 40 minutes
