I don’t know if this family recipe originated with my Aunt Bobbie, but she always love to make these cookies.  This is a cookie that really develops a full flavor after they are stored for a few days.


  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1t ground ginger
  • 1 1/2t baking soda
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 egg


  1. Mix the ingredients and knead on a floured dough board
  2. roll out the dough to about 3/8 inch thick
  3. cut out cookies with a 2.5 to 3 inch cookie cutter
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 10 minutes
