Cornbread – Traditional Southern

This is the traditional Southern Cornbread that I grew up with.  It’s a no frills recipe that was a staple in East Texas.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup yellow stone ground corn meal
  • 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 T baking powder
  • 1 egg
  • milk
  • 1T salt

Directions

  1. Oil and Pre-heat a large cast-iron skillet
  2. Sift the dry ingredients
  3. Mix in the egg & milk – for standard cornbread add enough milk so that the batter is at a thick, but pourable consistency.  If making to use in dressing, add more milk to get a medium pourable consistency.
  4. Pour into the hot skillet
  5. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes at 400 degrees F.

Additional ingredients can be added to this base mix to alter the flavor of the cornbread such as sugar/honey, cheese, peppers, etc.
